Spanish for Good

Connecting U.S. learners with experienced Spanish teachers from Nicaragua

Spanish for Good

iGR's Spanish for Good program benefits students by providing Spanish instruction at a very affordable price, while also providing a living wage to experienced Spanish teachers in Nicaragua.

Spanish for Good was originally created by Corky and Sandy Peavy in Austin, Texas and administered from 2011 to 2024. Jenny Gillott of iGR has been a student for many years, and iGR is happy to assume the administration of the program to continue the good service provided.

Meet our first teacher, Cecilia Moraga.

How does it work?

  • One-on-one Spanish classes are held on Zoom.
  • Classes are typically held for 40 minutes two or three times per week, but this schedule can be modified to meet students’ needs.
  • Teachers decide on the curriculum and may use textbooks (possibly from a student’s class in the U.S.), workbooks, websites and videos to support learning.

Who are possible students?

  • Adults who have no Spanish knowledge and want to learn
  • Adults who need to learn industry-specific Spanish for their profession
  • Adults who want to review and practice what they learned previously
  • Adults who want to maintain their Spanish proficiency with conversations with a native speaker
  • Young school-age children who would benefit from learning a second language
  • Older school-age students who want to reinforce what they are learning in their school

How much does it cost?

  • Because of the difference in our two countries’ economies and the strong dollar, the classes are extremely economical.
  • Pricing depends on the number of classes per week and the length of class. For two 40-minute classes per week, the cost is $53 per month, which averages to $10 an hour.
  • Some students will also be asked to purchase a textbook or workbook from a retailer such as Amazon.

How much does the teacher get paid?

  • All of your monthly payment will go to the teachers in Nicaragua, directly benefiting the families and the local economy.
  • As part of its contribution to Spanish for Good, iGR will cover all financial fees associated with international payments, Zoom subscriptions, internet service and other IT costs of the teachers.

How will I pay?

  • Payment will be simple and convenient for you!
  • iGR will Venmo request students on the first of each month for the agreed-upon monthly fee. Students will pay iGR directly through Venmo, and iGR will transfer the funds to the teacher.
